Here are some reasons your company should consider a postcard:


1. Cost effective: A regular-sized postcard only costs $.23. You can send up to a 4 1/4" x 6" card without incurring additional expense. This cost is before any bulk-mailing discounts, which can substantially add to savings. They are also inexpensive to print, even if you go to a four-color job. And, since a postcard is a single piece of paper with no envelope, post cards don't incur a folding and stuffing charge: simply print, label, and send 'em.


2. Postcards are versatile: Your business can use a postcard to show a picture of a new product, send a reprint of a recent advertisement, invite people to an upcoming event, or announce a new service offering. You can also use a postcard to direct people to your website.

When we speak about viral marketing, we are not talking about the newest disease. We are not talking about a Mad Cow Disease variant or something that you need to be vaccinated for. In fact, we are not referring to a disease at all.

What we are talking about is literally the most powerful traffic generation technique available on the internet. Viral marketing is so powerful that it makes the search engines look small and insignificant in comparison. Even link exchanges, as powerful as they can be, wilt into oblivion in comparison.

What you do with viral marketing is create something, anything, that visitors will want to give to other people. This thing, whatever it is, contains a link and perhaps a short advertisement for your website, ezine or ebook. So far so good, this is just good marketing. The viral part comes in because the people who receive these items want to give them to other people, who in turn want to give them away also.

So you see? What you get is an explosion of marketing for a very small price. It's actually kind of like an avalanche, in that you throw a snowball down a slope and it just grows and grows until the whole mountain of ice and snow is tumbling down.

One very cool viral marketing technique that any web site can take advantage of is greeting cards. I'm sure you've run across these all over the web. You select a graphic (a drawing, photo or other image), perhaps a sound file and add some text. This is sent to one or more people via email. These people open the email and click on a link to view their card. They, of course, have the option from here to visit your web site and perhaps send additional cards to other people (or back to the sender).

If your cards are good enough, you can find this technique alone will generate an incredible amount of traffic. Of course, you have the same problem with greeting cards that you have with your web site - you have to get people to it to begin with. Once you do that, however, you will find that it becomes more or less self maintaining. The more traffic you get the more you generate. Just make sure that all of your greeting card pages are listed in the search engines, well displayed on your page (and perhaps all of your pages) and advertised elsewhere as much as practical.

In fact, it's a good idea to spend as much or more time marketing the greeting cards as the rest of your site, since these tend to create visitors exponentially, while your site is linear.

How do you put greeting cards on your site? First, pick a theme or two. If your site is about model railroads, for example, you might get some photos of trains and train sets; you could include vacation photos, cute animal pictures, scanned drawings or anything else that you feel would make a good card. Just remember to honor copyrights - make sure you have the right to make copies of the materials before you use them.

Once you have a theme or two, you need to find a greeting card service. I've experimented with a few options. I've tried hosting it entirely on my own site, and what I've found is it is difficult to maintain. I've also tried it completely hosted on another site and found it is too restrictive.

The service that I settled upon is called CyberGreeting Network - http://cybergreet.net/. This company, in my opinion, provides the best of both worlds (local and remotely hosted).

The pages, images and sound files are stored on your own web site. You can tailor these all that you want so they blend with your pages perfectly. This is the perfect freedom, and as long as you set up the form properly all will work fine.

How do you do this? You download a template file (as explained in their instructions) and modify it to suite your needs. This may require a little effort on your part (as well as some skill with HTML) but the end result will be worth it.

The remote part of the product (which is free, by the way) is the piece that actually formats and sends the card. You see, on your page you get the visitor to supply the answers to a series of questions in a form. The form data is submitted to a CGI routine which puts everything together into a greeting card. Your visitor simply answers the questions and presses submit. You pass all of this to the routine, which then sends the card to the destination.

I was able to get half a dozen pages of greeting cards working perfectly in an afternoon. These remain on my site, and serve me well by creating a steady, growing stream of traffic. I think you would do well to take a look and determine if this will work for your site as well.

Altruism. Corporate responsibility. Philanthropy. These are often used to describe cause-related marketing, an activity in which businesses join with charities or causes to market an image, product, or service for mutual benefit.

Embracing a cause makes good business sense. Nothing builds brand loyalty among today's increasingly hard-to-please consumers like a companys proven commitment to a worthy cause. Other things being equal, many consumers would rather do business with a company that stands for something beyond profits.

Powerful marketing edge

Cause-related marketing can become a cornerstone of your marketing plan. Your cause-related marketing activities should highlight your company's reputation within your target market. Cause-related marketing can positively differentiate your company from your competitors and provide an edge that delivers other tangible benefits, including:

  • Increased sales

  • Increased visibility

  • Increased customer loyalty

  • Enhanced company image

  • Positive media coverage

Cosmetic dentist Mark McMahon made himself a media mini-celebrity with a thriving practice due in part to his high-profile pro bono work in his community, a strategy that landed him radio and TV appearances in areas where he worked.

McMahon established partnerships with local charities, including a homeless shelter and a shelter for battered women, and offered free dental services to their members. Before each event, he contacted local media and let them know what he was up to. Several TV crews showed up, filmed him treating patients, and later aired the segments on the evening news.

"These events were surprisingly easy to arrange, and every year, they'd help us get press simply by doing these charitable promotions," McMahon says. "Local television news stations loved the emotional element. And it was obviously rewarding to see patients after we'd treated them who'd been in pain for months talking about how glad they were to be relieved of their toothaches."

Another project involved the Delancey Street Foundation, a residential education center for former substance abusers and ex-convicts. "I agreed to treat some of their members' acute dental needs," McMahon says. "I quickly appreciated the media appeal of transforming the appearance of these rough-looking guys with terrible smiles."

McMahon captured the event with before and after photos. "These guys had missing teeth and terrible smiles," he says. "So I had a professional photographer capture before pictures of these guys in street clothes with their snarling faces. After I fixed their teeth, we took more pictures, but this time dressed the guys in suits and ties, now looking like lawyers and accountants, with me sitting right in the middle. The media loved it, and it was great seeing these men looking like new."

McMahon's TV appearances created name recognition. "After I did the story on a local television show, I was recognized in my gym by a masseuse who had seen the show," McMahon recalls. "She said, 'I was thinking about you this morning while I was flossing my teeth.' She became a great source of referrals."

Cause-related marketing yields mutual benefit. Look for partners with a similar agenda whose goals can be better achieved by partnering with your business. Take inventory of the assets that make you an appealing partner in a cause-related venture.

There are many types of mutually beneficial relationships you can form with your cause-related partner, including special events, sales promotions and collection plans. An easy way to embrace a cause is to team up with a charity.

Whenever Johnny "Love" Metheny, a slightly famous nightclub owner in San Francisco, opens a new club, he shares the limelight with a local charity. "I have a history of including the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in my grand openings," says Metheny, who was voted the society's Man of the Year in 1991. "It's not only something I feel good about, but it helps us market our businesses to the community and media at the same time."

Volunteer with an organization. When Eunice Azzani, an executive recruiter, volunteered to serve on the board of the San Francisco AIDS Foundation, she didn't anticipate that it would connect her with executives from Mervyn's, Bank of America, and Wells Fargo Bank, all of who eventually hired her to work for them.

"People don't hire a piece of paper or a process. They hire people they trust," Azzani says. "Volunteering for a position at a local organization makes you very trustworthy." She advises business owners to target causes they believe in. "If you're helping with a cause you believe in, people will see that you care. And they'll realize you will probably care as much about your work."

As your partnership takes shape, become ambassadors for each other. Talk about the charitable organization and have flyers available. Promote the organization (and your partnership) on your website and in your newsletters. Ask your partner to extend the same courtesies to you.

Never lose the marketing focus of your community partnership efforts. Even though the work is philanthropy, your cause should generate interest in your company and motivate people to buy from it. Select a cause that is important to your target market, and make sure your target market sees that connection.

Find someone who has reached a level of success you want to reach for yourself and ask about the methods they used and how long it took to get there. Keep in mind that even with a proven formula, different people may get different results.

Solutions - Forget about trying to sell anything, offer solutions instead! Most MLM businesses will have two types of solutions; one type from the product or service and one type from the opportunity itself. For example, if you provide long distance phone service, it could be a solution to high phone bills. The opportunity may be a solution for people who want to work from home and spend more time with their children.

Action - You may have the World's best marketing system or an experienced mentor to guide your every step, but you still need to make it happen by taking action! You should have a weekly and a monthly plan that you're able to follow. The plan should include reviewing/updating ads, answering questions from your prospects, participating in conference calls, and doing whatever it takes to run your business.

Guidance - The successful people in an organization should offer guidance and support to help others become successful. People just getting started or people who want to take their business to a higher level should seek out those who have already been down that road. Helping others and passing along tips helps increase the retention rate and makes the experience more profitable and enjoyable for more people.

Enthusiasm - You should be enthusiastic because it will be reflected in your phone calls and written messages. People respond more favorably to what you say about your product or opportunity when you are positive. It is good to be upbeat, but don't overdo it. You can most likely think of someone you've met who is so bubbly that they seem to be hyperactive and/or hysterical. That's not the best impression to make.

Customer Review: Great up till about halfway

I am about three quarters way through this book and here are my thoughts. The first half of this book is great almost perfect. Feriss talks about overcoming fear, time management and does so quite effectively. For this reason, this book is worth a read. But, like the two reviewers before me said, about halfway, he starts to talk about outsourcing to find more time to jet set around the globe and creating your 'mule' that is some cash generating business e.g. creating and selling a product over the internet.

In my opinion, the idea of outsourcing to find more time for the fun things in life is quite contradictory and is quite an exaggeration. First of all, someone clearly has to get the work done so you can live the good life - if it's not you it's that guy in India. Well, how about his own good life, do you really think he wants to write a business plan for some greedy American. Perhaps, he could outsource that business plan to Africa for cents/ hour netting him a profit which would allow him to jet set around the world or Asia at the very least. Secondly, do you really think you can take your mind off work and have fun while someone you have never met in India does your work? I think not.

On the topic of creating one's mule, while the reality of life is that most businesses are driven by profit. Preaching the "make a product and sell it" doctrine to the masses is not the way to go. This will only help flood the markets with tons of sub par products from desperate entrepreneurs looking for the golden ticket or should I say mule. And here rises another contradiction, Feriss preaches about outsourcing this and that and doing more in less time, try outsourcing product conceptualization and design and see what margins you get.





Customer Review: Streamlines your work planning

My only regret with this book is not reading it about 10 years ago before I went to university. Readers should not fool themselves into thinking that Tim's methods are a free ride. Far from it. The books explains how it still takes brains, work and some brassy bravado to achieve this kind of working lifestyle. It even gives simple case studies. I liked Tim's easy-read, humorous, simple-to-follow writing and his generosity with information that some of us have been busting our butts to find. Unlike many wealthy people, Tim Ferris appears to actually be enjoying life with fitness studies, dancing, traveling and martial arts. Looks like paradise to me. This book has already saved me time and money.
